I feel like there's a lot of stigma associated with being average. Not to have a boomer take, but I do think that telling kids they were gifted in the 90s and early 2000s because they read more chapter books than their peers was a mistake. Whenever the topic of "gifted kids" maybe not being so gifted comes up, these former accelerated readers get really defensive about it. They usually are really upset that they used to be special and now they're just normal, and blame gifted and talented programs for building up their egos so much. To the former gifted kids who are really upset about no longer being above average, I have one thing to say; You're 28.

Realistically, you and I are probably pretty average, and that's okay! Admitting your place on the middle of the bell curve takes off a lot of pressure to be better than everyone else, and gives you the chance to lighten up a little bit.
